Old is truly gold for Abhay
Abhay Deol is one Bollywood actor who has always made it a point to steer clear of monotony. After making an unusual debut, he has continued to do off-beat and different cinema. And at a time when most actors are busy playing younger characters, Abhay is planning to essay the role of a 40-plus IAS officer in his next film, Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai.
But is it the right career move to play an older character at such a critical juncture in his career? “I love Dibakar’s style of film-making and have full faith in his vision. So when he told me to play a much older character, I didn’t hesitate,” says Abhay, adding that the role also gives him a new challenge to look forward to. Traditionally, playing older characters has always been considered suicidal. But if we can have a 40-plus Aamir Khan successfully pulling off the role of a college student half his real age in 3 Idiots, then why can't Abhay Deol do the reverse?
